You and I and AI
We’re in this together
One of these two statements is true. AI is wonderful. AI is awful.
“Quite simply, AI is now the key to the future,” wrote Enrique Dans on 2nd October 2024, concluding, “My humble advice is to learn about AI, get curious, work with others to put it into practice, and make sure that it’s used to its full potential to make the world a better place.”
And yet — wait! I’ve just read Susie Kearley 🐹 Guinea pig slave’s story from a few days back, Wired Declares 47% of Medium Content as AI Slop. That title gives you the gist of the story, but I’ll quote Susie Kearley’s comment from about half-way through, “To me, it seems we are all battling against AI.”
What do I think? I wrote this a while back. Why AGI? I couldn’t work out why I might want an external brain to write my stories for me.
Still can’t, actually. If AI was writing this, I’d have to find something else I like doing with my time.
Writing another story, probably.
We can all recognise “AI slop”. If we couldn’t, there wouldn’t be a problem. If the writing was good enough to convince all of us — the tools wouldn’t matter. Surely?
Yes, I know. So-called “hallucinations”. But hey — post-truth, right? We’re all just as bad. Back in October, I wrote this. Donald Trump Ate My Hamster about my time at Mar-a-Lago. And now the news media are telling me — get this — he’s president again.
Donald Trump as president again — ha ha ha, funny.
AI will fit right in.
