Who Knew?

I have the answer.

[Most of this was written before Donald went to war. The question stands.]

Conspicuous by their absence from the relentlessly attention-grabbing coverage of Donald’s boringly frantic antics: H L Mencken and Alex Garland.

It was H L Mencken who said, “On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart’s desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.”

But nobody quotes H L Mencken in their talks to camera.

He’s not that obscure, surely?

And it was Alex Garland who wrote and directed the film Civil War (2024), which depicts a civil war in the USA between the federal government and several states including California.

But nobody mentions Civil War either.

It opened everywhere in Spring last year, 2024, big high-profile launch, and made serious money.

So — yeah — conspicuous by their absence.

Maybe it’s all getting a bit too real.

Not that this is directly relevant, except in the sense that it was a very 2025 moment, but my laptop’s screen froze earlier on. So I grabbed my phone to get a quick pic of the paragraphs I’d written.

Pressed the camera icon and up came a box. “AI overview: this icon controls the camera function of the phone…”

Ahhh….

This year’s COP — Conference of the Parties — on climate change will happen in the (formerly small) rainforest town of Belem, Brazil, in November.

As you read this, construction crews are tearing down rainforest to make space for delegates to discuss saving the rainforest.

You think electing a president who sends in bombers to distract from the chaos back home is the biggest problem we have?
