They’re late. Today I received an email from Amazon suggesting that I might like to buy the book Escape Mutation by William Essex.
On 3rd January, I wrote a story suggesting that, “Surveillance capitalism is onto us. Every time we mention something, we get an email to buy it. We can game that.”
I mentioned Escape Mutation by William Essex. Yes, that is me.
I also suggested that maybe, my whole demographic as defined by the algorithm will also receive an email to buy Escape Mutation by William Essex. Hardly cost-effective just to target me, I said.
All those expensive online marketing courses. All those urgent stories and action-point listicles about marketing. All those books.
When I wrote The First-Novelist’s Guide to Getting Started — that’s The First-Novelist’s Guide to Getting Started by William Essex — I did wonder whether I should do some research into today’s state-of-the-art marketing techniques.
And then I thought — Nah. Why bother?
