Making Up Truth
Say it IS so!
What is truth? How do I know a fact is a fact?
And other such questions. There’s been much blah recently about disinformation, fake news, et cetera.
And yet — after widespread recent condemnation of a certain person’s interest in buying Greenland, I see that the media have unearthed another secessionist movement in Greenland. That person wanted Greenland, and now Greenland wants to be free/available.
I think I’ll go with “available”. And if we’re done with fact-checking, I’ll add “at the right price”. No offence, Greenland. But the media want this.
That imaginary future transaction came up out of nowhere. It’s made of words. It wasn’t true, and now — it’s going that way. It’s headed towards true because somebody had an idea, and insisted on it, and the media picked up on it. Watch for the “putting a price on Greenland” follow-up story.
In other news, I nearly bought a pack of “luxury recycled A4 paper” for my printer yesterday. Luxury? Recycled? The two words go together like — no, strike that. Same point made with fewer words — luxury, my ass.
Words don’t have meanings like they used to, do they?
But at least we know Darth Vader is Luke’s father. Some truths we can still hold to be self-evident. Even if they are spoilers (sorry).
Here in the UK, we were surprised to learn that the new US president and our prime minister have “a very good relationship”, even though they’ve hardly met…
…and we were somewhat less surprised to be told that our current foreign secretary didn’t really mean it when he said, in 2018, that a certain person was “a woman-hating, neo-Nazi-sympathising sociopath”.
And yeah, Elon’s salute was just a wave, right?
What is truth?
Whatever you want it to be, baby.
