Lest we forget
Here are the first two paragraphs of the UK-government media release that announced the G7 Summit in Cornwall, UK, in June 2021.
The first reads:
“Prime Ministers and Presidents from the world’s leading democracies will come together in Cornwall in June to address shared challenges, from beating coronavirus and tackling climate change, to ensuring that people everywhere can benefit from open trade, technological change and scientific discovery.”
Gives you a warm feeling, doesn’t it?
The second paragraph reads:
“The Prime Minister will use the first in-person G7 summit in almost two years to ask leaders to seize the opportunity to build back better from coronavirus, uniting to make the future fairer, greener and more prosperous.”
I wrote about this before, I know. Before the Summit, I quoted these two paragraphs to express my optimism and relief that we were about to be saved at last.
And now — isn’t it great? Six months on from the G7 Summit at which those leaders addressed the challenges of beating coronavirus and tackling climate change — or, sorry, was it the other way round? Tackling coronavirus and beating climate change? So easy to forget — and here we all are, people everywhere, benefiting from, er, open trade, technical something and what was the other one?
Got it! Must have been innovation. It’s always inovation. And I didn’t even scroll up to check.
As I sit here, my arm still aching from yesterday’s coronavirus booster, watching the rain, wrapped in a blanket against the cost of heating this room, I reflect on how much worse the situation would be if all those “leaders” (sorry, but you have to laugh) hadn’t made that expensive, fuel-heavy trip to the seaside.
